A Great Street Sweeper

“If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as a Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all the hosts of heaven and earth will pause to say, “Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job well.”  –Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Putting all our effort into our work, even the tasks we’re not particularly fond of, causes us to be attentive to ALL the tasks. We then become attentive to ALL people, to ALL matters, to our community and to our world. When we do our work well, we become an example of personal responsibility, of quality, of dedication, and along the way, we create a meaningful, purposeful life. Thank you, Dr. King, for this reminder to do our work well.
